What is a contig?

A contig is a contiguous DNA sequence assembled from overlapping shorter reads generated during genome sequencing. Contigs represent longer, reconstructed fragments of a genome but may still contain gaps or ambiguities. They serve as essential building blocks in genome assembly, later linked into scaffolds to approximate complete chromosome structures.
