What is sample barcoding?

Updated:

September 16, 2025

Sample barcoding is a technique that assigns unique DNA or RNA sequence tags, called barcodes, to individual samples or molecules before sequencing to allow pooling (multiplexing) of multiple samples in a single sequencing run. Barcoding improves efficiency, reduces costs, and enables applications like single-cell sequencing and lineage tracing. Foundry ingests barcoded FASTQs and supports demultiplexing through appropriate pipelines.
